Is There a Real Cure For Diabetes?

The answer to the question of whether there is a real cure for diabetes often stirs debate. There are opposing views as to whether or not there is a cure for diabetes. This is especially so in the case of type 2 diabetes. Dietary changes can often times result in a reversal of the condition. But is it cured?

People who follow a diet in which they completely eliminate or even minimize their intake of carbohydrates (starches and sugars) containing foods, often say they are free from diabetes. It seems that way. If you do not eat carbohydrates there is barely any blood sugar from food entering into the blood, and therefore less need for the body to produce insulin. However, there is a downside to this.

Omission of carbohydrates is not recommended by nutritionists, because while you may reduce the need for insulin you will also be depriving your body of many essential nutrients and fiber. This in itself may lead to other serious medical conditions such as:

  • Acidosis - This is a condition in which there is an increased amount of acidity in the blood. This is the breeding ground for many diseases.
  • Hypoglycemia - Eliminating Carbohydrates results in reduced levels of blood sugar. When the level falls below 70 mg/dl the condition known as hypoglycemia occurs.
  • Wasting away of muscle tissues - When there is no blood glucose available from carbohydrates the body will resort to getting energy from the fatty and muscle cells. The results of this action will be more than obvious.
  • Unattractive and unhealthy weight loss - The wasting away of the muscle cells and the fatty tissues will no doubt result in unhealthy looking skin and sagging muscles.
A well balanced diet should never eliminate any of the major food groups or types. The truth of the matter is that anyone who has successfully reversed the symptoms or effects of diabetes must maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to remain free from the condition. Reverting to the unhealthy lifestyle that resulted in diabetes in the first place will only cause the recurrence of diabetes.
